Improved atmospheric stable boundary layer formulations for Navy Seasonal Forecasting
نویسنده
چکیده
Many large-scale weather forecast models prescribes too much turbulent mixing stably stratified conditions, which causes problems with the depth of nocturnal or high-latitude winter boundary layers, lack of inertially driven low-level wind maxima and inversion-capped low clouds. The link between the turbulent momentum flux and the associated Ekman pumping and therefore the lifetime of synopticscale weather system has so far made impossible a satisfactory solution.

Western Pacific Warm Pool Region Sensitivity to Convective Triggering by Boundary Layer Thermals in the NOGAPS Atmospheric GCM
The sensitivity of the atmospheric general circulation model of the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System to a parameterization of convective triggering by atmospheric boundary layer thermals is investigated. The study focuses on the western Pacific warm pool region and examines the results of seasonal integrations of the model for the winter of 1987/88. A parameterization for t...
متن کاملUnified Cloud and Mixing Parameterizations of the Marine Boundary Layer: EDMF and PDF-based cloud approaches
The objectives of this project are: i) to develop a unified parameterization for the Marine Boundary Layer (MBL) and ii) to implement and test this parameterization in the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS). This unified MBL parameterization will be based on two main components: (i) the Eddy-Diffusivity Mass-Flux (EDMF) parameterization of boundary layer mixing; and ...

Over the past decades, numerous regime formulations, describing channel width, average flow depth and channel slope, have been proposed for gravel-bed rivers. Using the downstream hydraulic geometry measurements from 280 field channels, nine gravel-bed predictive formulations were compared. They are attributed to Bray, Chang, Hey and Thorne, Kellerhals, Neil, Parker and Simons, and Albertson....
